A sure sign that Delta is currently in the aeronautic equivalent of hospice.

There was a cartoon caption in some magazine a week ago (it was either the New Yorker or Parade) where a guy in a parachute is at the front door, and the caption reads, “Delta is now charging extra for landings!”

Delta is a business.  The cost of jet fuel is sky-high.  Why on earth is it bad for them to charge extra for carrying the extra weight?  It would cost you a lot more than $50 to ship that second suitcase UPS.

All, just a guess, but I’m assuming Kendall titled this as he did (which I confess I also found strange at first sight), in terms of the economic difficulties so many are faced with.  I assume his “sadness” is due not to the baggage charge, but the fact that the current economic climate necessitated it, and perhaps also due to a concern for the welfare of Delta employees should the company be so financially pressured. (see, for example the “makes the heart sad” post re: GM layoffs above).

I’m just guessing, mind you, but based on 5 years of reading this blog just about daily, I think I have a pretty good idea of how Kendall thinks much of the time!
