Living Church: ‘A Problem of America’ at Lambeth

Posted by Kendall Harmon

Bishop K.D. Daniel of East Kerala in the Church of South India (United) never wavered in his determination to the Lambeth Conference, but that does not mean he is happy with the situation in the Anglican Communion.

“The problem we are basically facing is a problem of America,” he said. “They want to push their problems on to other nations.”

Bishop Daniel was one of 16 nominated to serve indaba group listeners on July 25. This is the group that will prepare the conference “Reflections” paper.

Issues of human sexuality do not predominate in East Kerala, said Bishop Daniel. His diocese is about 360 miles long, but averages less than 50 miles in width. It was created about 25 years ago by dividing the Indian state of Kerala in half. Western Kerala has a prosperous and growing service-sector economy, including tourism, public administration, banking and finance, transportation, and communications. East Kerala is much less developed with large tropical rain forests and agriculture as the primary source of employment. Unemployment is high in East Kerala, Bishop Daniel said.

200 parishes up from 75 in 1983 eh?

Quick! How many dioceses in the Episcopal Organiza- I mean Church have 200 parishes? How about 100? How about an increase in parishes since 1983? (That’s mean I admit - but one must ask.)

Kerala. Was there on mission immersion experience for 3 weeks in 1999. Love it.

I agree completely - this is America acting in a unilateral fashion which created the problem.  If ECUSA had listened and followed the guidance their brothers throughout the world had offered a decade earlier, we wouldn’t be in this situation.

How did this process work?  Who are the others?  This is a key.  The person who drafts, controls.

Bishop Daniel ... asked if Bishop Schofield had indeed left The Episcopal Church. When he received an affirmative answer, he looked down and shook his head sadly.

But Bp. Daniel should be advised that Bp. Schofield has remained faithful to our Lord, Jesus Christ and to the Anglican Communion.

We ar the Americans, the mighty, mighty Americans.  Only we count.

That was condemned on political grounds and endorsed for Lame-beth by the same HOB and PB and GC, right?

No one to accuse the ECUSA/TEC/GCC/EO-PAC of consistency and make it stick!

William P. Sulik, #2, here is the list.  It’s not entirely clear how these people were chosen.  Pre-conference documents said they would be elected by their groups, but the announcement said they had been chosen for geographical and ideological balance.
