Kendall Harmon: Update from the Standing Committee Meeting in South Carolina

Posted by Kendall Harmon

The meeting started at 10:30. We are still meeting. The atmosphere is focused, intense, deeply trusting of one another and the bishop, and with a sense that the stakes are very very high.

You are indeed fortunate to have a Bishop like +Lawrence, Dr. H.  He’s an absolute rock and a man of great character.  It’s only natural people would trust him.

Sorry to ask a dumb question - what’s the meeting about?

Phil, I think it’s about DioSC’s post-GC statement.

#3 The subject doesn’t appear to have been published.  One can only guess.

#4, 5 - I can imagine - if it’s about the subject of cutting the gangrenous ties with ECUSA, then I get the angst.  If it’s about a statement condemning the actions of GC09, then I would see that as pretty straightforward.  My mind jumped to the former based on this and the prior post, but, if so, I would say that even being on the table is huge news.  But maybe that’s common knowledge.

As I understand what Bishop Lawrence said to our diocesan convention back in February and again in his interview after GC, I suspect it is about “finding a place to stand and to thrive”. To quote Bishop Lawrence, “So we shall”.  WHERE we can stand and thrive as diocese is what I am guessing is the main topic of discussion.

I am not convinced ACNA is the answer to the “where ?” dilemma as Bishop Lawrence’s statements in his interview were not entirely supportive of ACNA.

Just a reminder that the clergy of the diocese (SC) will most likely discuss this same issue at the next scheduled clergy day, August 13th. So…... for those inclinded to prayer, please put that date on your schedule for intercessory prayer.

The Bishop can not make the decision by himself, nor can the standing committee nor the deans nor the clergy. Perhaps further discussion at a diocesan convention?? This is not easy nor will it happen quickly.
