Wow…that was a good speech, and I used to be a speech writer. He had clever illustrations, he was clear in his diction, and he outlined a grand scheme of what he was trying to achieve.

I particularly liked his refrain from the psalm. Most good speeches have some sort of take away refrain like that. I’m impressed. If all bishops were as clear in their speech, theology, and thought as Bishop Lawrence, the church would be in a much better place.

He was just as persuasive the next day, Sunday, at our parish’s forum between services. Quite a speaker, indeed. If you have heard him speak recently, there are a couple of consistent themes and illustrations he likes to use.  I really like the one he came up with for the diocesan convention in March, Making biblical Anglicans for a global age.  Even mentioned it as a possible T-shirt motto-. Yep, you can now buy the t-shirt.

With a nod to Gilbert and Sullivan, perhaps he should be the model of a modern Episcopal bishop ?? Has anyone else heard that Gilbert and Sulivan sung as parody of Episcopalians??
