The election of a lesbian priest as a bishop in the Episcopal Church is likely to cause further problems in the divided Anglican Communion, said Arch bishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.
"The election of Mary Glasspool by the diocese of Los Angeles as suffragan [assistant] bishop-elect raises very serious questions not just for the Episcopal Church and its place in the Anglican Communion, but for the communion as a whole," said Williams, the spiritual leader of the 77-million Anglicans worldwide, in a December 6 statement.
Glasspool, who has served as canon, or assistant, to the bishops of the Diocese of Maryland, has lived in a two-decade partnership with another woman. She is the first gay candidate elected as bishop since the Episcopal Church in July opened all levels of church service to gays and lesbians in committed relationships.

[Edited] Has he “persisted in sin”, as claimed? Or is this a way of saying that one disagrees with his position on the appropriateness of elevating the Rev. Glasspool to the epsicopacy? [Edited by Elf] December 14, 11:09 pm | [comment link] |

This liberal Protestant rag lets +Jon Bruno of LA have the last word. Namely, he downplayed the dispute and opined that Glasspool’s election would stir “only a little bit of a wave.” No sir, nothing provocative here, he wants to say. No big deal at all. TEC has moved on…
Alas, there is some measure of truth to that, in the sense that hardly anyone who knows anything about the trials and tribulations of Anglicanism over the last decade is likely to be surprised by the election of a second “openly gay” bishop in TEC. It was only a matter of time until it happened.
But it’s still scandalous, of course, and totally unacceptable. It only shows that +Bruno [Edited] is so fanatically committed to his pro-gay ideology that he’s become blind to the consequences of his fateful, ungodly choices (or he’s willfully ignoring them). But that’s what persisting in sin does. It hardens the heart, causes the conscience to become calloused, and makes you blind to your sin, and ever less willing to repent.
