When we bought this farm from a retiring couple ten years ago, part of the deal was that the dogs went with the place. The previous owners were moving into an RV, so the dogs had to stay. There was a 14-year-old bitch who died a couple of years later, but her now-16-year-old son is still chasing cars at a very respectable speed. In human terms, he’s a centenarian.

Last June the previous owners came by for a visit, and the old dog’s immediate response was touching in the extreme. Same thing as in the video.

When the Genesis creation account assigns a special category of creation to the nepheshi’m—“soulish” creatures—God was telling us that they’re all special. Dogs, horses, cats, dolphins ... whatever, some animals were meant for relationship with humans.

And a special thanks to those who deploy on our behalf. “Embrace the suck” and know that some of us really appreciate it, even if we only have two legs.
