Catholics in Syria are so fearful of losing their lives at any moment that they say farewell to each other at the end of every Mass, the Archbishop of Damascus has said.

Maronites are not Roman Catholics. They are of the Church at Antioch, not Rome. Their liturgical language is Syriac and not Latin.

They are in full communion with Rome and accept the Bishop of Rome as the first among equals.
