El Camino Real Sees Reasons for Hope

Posted by Kendall Harmon

The Diocese of El Camino Real adopted its 2008 budget Oct. 27 by unanimous voice vote, a turn of events that was a pleasant surprise to those who recall past annual conventions at which every line item was cause for extensive debate.

Bishop-elect Mary Gray-Reeves, who has been in the office for six weeks, attributed the unanimity to the amount of money there was to fight over.

“We don’t have a lot of money,” she said in an interview during a break in the convention.

Among her first decisions was to make no change to the diocese’s position to allow private celebrations of same-sex unions. She also says she does not want to see the break up of the Anglican Communion.

Ok.  I am sure that the ABC and the AC will manage to ignore this too.

An interesting diocese. Fired the last bishop in 2004. Now has a new one. Good time for a rest. Diocese was one of the few that was growing from 1996 to 2002, about 4 percent. Since 2002 membership has fallen about 17 percent. Plate & Pledge was soaring by 33 percent between 1996 and 2000, way above inflation. But since 2000, Plate & Pledge has only grown by about 12 percent, well below inflation. With this checkered recent history a quiet convention is indeed good news.  Statmann

Diocesan Convention 2007

RESOLVED, this Convention joins our bishop in dedicating ourselves to encourage all members of the Diocese to spend the coming year in wonder; we commit ourselves to listen to God’s call and expand our thinking, searching for mind-changing, limitless ideas and raising up leaders from all congregations.
