ENS—Mary Glasspool receives required number of standing committee consents in unofficial tally

Diocese of Los Angeles Bishop-elect Mary Douglas Glasspool has received the required number of consents from diocesan standing committees to her ordination and consecration, pending verification by the presiding bishop's office.

The Diocese of Los Angeles announced March 10 that Glasspool had received 61 standing committee consents, in an unofficial tally. A majority of consents, or 56, were required from standing committees in the Episcopal Church's 109 dioceses.

"I give thanks for the standing commitees' prompt action, and for the consents to the elections of my sisters," Los Angeles Bishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno said on March 10, referring to both Glasspool and Bishop-elect Diane Jardine Bruce.

"I look forward to the final few consents to come in from the bishops in the next few days, and I give thanks for the fact that we as a church have taken a bold step for just action."

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori's office has yet to verify the official number of bishops with jurisdiction who have consented to Glasspool's ordination and consecration.

The GS meeting in Singapore will have this news, now. It was not my understanding that the Bishops vote would be revealed until the final day…does anyone have a different understanding? It would be better if the wider world had the news when it comes.

Actually, it sounds like +Bruno is tipping the Bishops’ hand by indicating that only a few more are needed. Unless I misunderstand his comment. I wasn’t aware he was supposed to be this forthcoming. The Standing Committees have sufficiently compromised the PB and Bonnie Anderson’s prior fatuous letter about what GC2009 did or did not do/mean/intend.  Do let the bishops try to hold up their end and make it a fait di accompli rather than more Bruno-esque “doesn’t happen in my diocese” fudge.

Not even the ABC can ignore this.  But he will find a way to “bless” it and all the other body graces he presupposes.

I really don’t see the big deal here.  The outcome is a forgone conclusion and has been from the start.  The usual huffing and puffing from the usual quarters notwithstanding, there will be no significant consequences over this. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.  I can not see this generating a new wave of defections.  Seriously.  Anyone who was ever going to leave TEO for any reason whatsoever has already done so.  Those still in it have nailed their flag to the masthead and are determined to go down with the ship.  Its not something that I or anyone else here is happy about.  But that’s the way it is.

Sometimes I get the feeling that there are a lot of people on this forum who haven’t figured this out.  So I guess it needs to be said bluntly.  The war for the soul of the Episcopal Church is over and the Christians lost.  What people choose to do with that fact is up to them.  But it is a fact.

I agree. Christians DO lose. But I also agree God will redeem the loss. That is really the hardest part - it is really hard to see God at work after a loss. That’s where faith kicks in as well as the support of the larger Body of Christ.

In the other LA election, the Bishop’s consent has already been revealed, so it is clearly not a matter of policy to hold off, and elections in several other dioceses have been confirmed before the last day of the process.  I am not aware of any canonical requirement for 815 to reveal anything before the last day of the process, however.  So, I guess they can hold back on information if they want to.  In the case of Forrester, most bishops seemed to want people to know how they voted, in this case, they seem to be withholding that info in most cases- even those we are almost certain would vote one way or the other don’t seem to be saying much.
Maybe someone could interest Frank Lockwood in doing a phone survey, but I think this one is a forgone conclusion.
