Congress was poised tonight to approve the boldest piece of American social legislation in half a century after President Obama issued a last-minute executive order to reassure anti-abortion Democrats who had been threatening to vote against his health reforms.
After 14 months of debate, the group of eight Democrats announced their support for a $940 billion health bill with just four hours to go until an historic vote that could transform Mr Obama’s presidency – but could also cost his party dearly at elections later this year.
The Bill, if passed, will bring near-universal health coverage to the US for the first time in the country’s history by requiring individuals to buy insurance and subsidising coverage for those who cannot afford it.
Facing solid Republican opposition and multiple defections from their own ranks, Democrats needed 216 votes in the House to pass the Bill, which would outlaw abuses by the health insurance industry and extend coverage to 32 million Americans who now lack it.

Why are visions of the common good on this blog so often tinged with xenophobia and contempt for those who struggle with basic survival? This is what gives conservatives a bad name among those of us who otherwise share this community’s concern for the Protestant churches’ Valentinian self-immolation. Respect for nuance, like the fear of God, belongs to the beginning of wisdom. March 22, 3:36 am | [comment link] |

Why do liberals see the coercive power of government being used to transfer wealth from honest working citizens to support lawbreakers that enter the country illegally, steal identities, violate tax laws, and drain social service revenues as a good thing? Contempt for injustice and thievery is not the same thing as contempt for those struggling for basic survival. Survey after survey has shown that when it comes to compassion, conservatives donate an order of magnitude more than liberals to charities. Liberals somehow think that taking other people’s money and giving it away indiscriminately is an act of compassion on their part. That’s what gives liberals a bad name among sane people. This gross injustice forced on the American people against the will of a large majority is an arrogant abuse of power and trust and I believe that it will not be tolerated. Then there is the question of real accounting. The numbers do not add up with this bill. It isn’t budget neutral or a deficit reducer as touted. The liberals are pointing at Social Security and Medicare as great successes and an example of what Health Care Reform will also do. They seem to have forgotten that Social Security is currently paying out more than it takes in and that Social Security, Prescription drug coverage, and Medicare will bankrupt our nation with $14,230,000,000,000, $18,828,000,000,000, and $74,873,000,000,000 in unfunded liabilities respectively. Sorry about that. Transferring the above comment from MS Word to the blog caused the spaces between paragraphs to disappear, making my post one long paragraph. Also, there is a typo. “There is a $464,000 debt per person due to government spending, and the average family size is 3 people, making the average family debt $1,390,000 on an average family income of only 1/3 of the population is working and the median family income is only $61,900!!!” This should read: “There is a $464,000 debt per person due to government spending, and the average family size is 3 people, making the average family debt $1,390,000 on a median family income of only $61,900!!!” I am going to repost the above and hope that the elves will delete the original post. The total of those three unfunded liabilities is $107,931,000,000,000. So with all the compassion that liberals pretend they have, they are really stealing money from our children and grandchildren so that they can pretend to be do-gooders, because it is simply impossible to pay the bill they are making with all their “compassion”. Let’s look at those numbers again, just for the sake of reality and sanity. There is a $464,000 debt per person due to government spending, and the average family size is 3 people, making the average family debt $1,390,000 on a median family income of only $61,900!!! That is not counting their mortgage and personal debt. The only saving grace to this entire mess is that the money truly isn’t there and that this will collapse the economy…sort of a national/international reset on the economic PC that is about to lock up with the “blue screen of death”. The reality is there, in black and white…or should I say red, because we are in red ink for as far as the eye can see. The liberals are about to take the “red pill” and will finally see the world as it truly is…the money isn’t there. “...extend coverage to 32 million Americans who now lack it. “
How many of the 32 million being covered are illegal immigrants that have broken the law to be here, broken our tax laws, and stolen identities?
The “$940 billion health bill” doesn’t count the $208 billion Medicare Fix that will end up costing us $59 billion…while we are about to lose our AAA rating because of our outrageous spending.
