Salvation Army Reports Record Donations Despite Sour Economy

Posted by Kendall Harmon

Nickels, dimes and quarters added up quickly last Christmas despite the economic slump as Americans donated a record $139 million to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign.

“America is an incredibly generous nation and philanthropy is alive and well, despite the current economic conditions impacting so many,” said Commissioner Israel L. Gaither, national commander of the Salvation Army.

“We are grateful for every donor, volunteer and corporate partner for supporting the Salvation Army’s mission by giving more than ever during a time when some have so little to give.”

Wow, #1, just…wow!

For others that may read this…

1) The Salvation Army started out on the east side of London in 1865 and that is where its international headquarters is currently located.
2) From their London headquarters, the Salvation Army reaches out to the poor, needy, and suffering in over 103 countries around the globe.
3) From their London headquarters, the Salvation Army adminsters and manages its 1.6 million volunteers.
4) From their London headquarters, the Salvation Army administers the provision of disaster relief, food, medical care, housing, and ministering to other social ills.
5) Salvation Army administers over $2 Billion in the United States alone and has an administrative and fundraising overhead of about 17%...yet, only 2% is for actual administration costs.

And, incredibly, someone has an axe to grind with them!

The Salvation Army is one of the very few charities which I support, because I know that as an organization, their motives are pure and they use their resources for the relief of suffering and the saving of souls.  They deserve the wholehearted support of every Christian.

I thank God for them. My son is currently in a lengthy program of theirs; he hasn’t had a drink in almost two months now, quite the record! It was his last, best hope.

I support them.  I have personally seen their actions during floods in my area…....they are in the “war zone” so as to speak…....and they “give” it all away…..no selling….it….....Remember well the floods of ‘93 and they were the first ones to respond…...yes, the Red Cross set up their phone lines and an office at the shelter, and had their “give us your money” ads on in less than 24 hours..Oh yes, forgot, the National Director of the Red Cross flew in to check things out….Elizabeth Dole in her designer jeans, to mingle with the flood victims…....I kid you not…they were straight from the jean boutique to her body
