Some Republican state lawmakers are privately saying they want Republican Gov. Mark Sanford to step down — of his own volition — this week.
Meanwhile, Sanford has spent portions of the last few days phoning key lawmakers and Republican Party activists, apologizing for his affair with an Argentinian woman that left him out of touch with his staff and other state leaders for the better part of a week.
On another note, a source close to Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said Sunday that Bauer has approached members of the Senate to discuss the possibility that, if Sanford resigns, Bauer would only serve the remainder of the governor’s term, focusing on job creation, and would not run for governor in 2010 as Bauer had originally intended.

With blood in the water, the RINO sharks are circling for the kill. I hope Sanford hangs tough on refusing to resign and then let’s see what they do. June 29, 5:45 pm | [comment link] |

If Sanford will not resign, this tells us what we should all suspect, that his apologies are mere words, political opium to dull the senses of the electorate. To refuse to resign tells us that he thinks that this detritus will wash away in the political tide, that his apologies are really all that is needed to wash his public soul clean. This is not courage, this is political opportunism, trickery we have seen often enough from both sides of the aisle. No: he must resign and then, if he dares, he should run again and let the voters try his worth in the marketplace. LM June 29, 9:58 pm | [comment link] |

i think so as well, he needs to GO. he will be too distracted to do his job well (and i don’t think he even did that before this) and he needs to focus on mending his marriage. it’s this type of hypocrisy from those who tout family values that give so much fodder to liberals. “Bauer would only serve the remainder of the governor’s term ........ and would not run for governor in 2010.” Right! If you believe that…. Interesting reference to Bauer and to two other prominent SC politicians in the last but one issue of the Columbia “Free Times”.
