Impressive straight married woman with grown children and impressive lesbian woman (clergy child) with “life partner.” Both very white. Out of a field of five candidates for two suffragan positions in a diocese that postures as oh-so-outreaching to Latinos/Latinas and African Americans, it is ironic that the African-American woman and the two Latin men garnered very few votes.

Correction to the above: There were six candidates. One other was a gay white man who says he is married to a man with whom he has adopted an African-American son. His numbers have been only slightly ahead of the two Latin men.

The interesting thing is that they will have an entirely new election after the first suffragan is chosen.  Arguably, if Bruce is elected on the next ballot, in the next election those voters may go for someone other than Glasspool.  I don’t expect that.  But then I don’t expect a lot of stuff that seems to happen these days.

First ballot of the second election is underway.  None of the other nominees have dropped out.

Glasspool has strong lead after the first ballot of the second election.

Interestingly though the Guatamala raised Vasquez is giving her a run for her money and is only 19 behind in lay votes.  He seems to have a strong ethnic ministry background which is probably useful in that diocese I imagine.

Second ballot is apparently in with no election.  I understand that a third has been taken that will be announced tomorrow.  At least that is what I hear from the floor.

I wanted to write I no longer care about this stuff happening in TEC. Actually, it only give me an opportunity to take my inner curmudgeon our for a walk. So… I can only echo the existential truth proclaimed above that these ‘elections’ will only ineluctably result in what is called TEC Diocese of Los Angeles becoming *less* diverse and *less* inclusive for the simple fact that very, very few people of African, Asian, or Latino descent even imagining that they would walk into a DioLA meeting house. I was interested to note that after All Saints’ Long Beach changed to a more salubrius jurisdiction that the ethnic mix more or less instantly expanded to include lots of people whose skin tone was other than obviously European. Ah, the beauty of the Law of Unexpected Consequences!

Richard, why are they waiting until tomorrow as the results seem to only take about 30 minutes?  Do you know?

Vasquez has been moving up at a faster rate in both clergy and laity votes on numbers.  Not so the liberal palefaces can cajole some votes and stuff the hispanics surely?    But I expect I don’t understand it all coming as it does from another planet.

I think they merely were scheduled to adjourn at 5:00 and let the staff in to rearrange the convention center for the banquet.  The second ballot was announced at 4:45.  Polls are open for -what?- twenty minutes maybe.  Past time for adjournment.

Ah - adjournment to stuff faces with food.

#18, I wouldn’t go that far.  This is a convention banquet, after all.  Real food rarely figures in those events.

I understand that the agenda had called for one election Friday and one election Saturday.  They got ahead of the schedule yesterday, so the began balloting on the second then.
