(Reuters) Islamist President says Egypt won’t reverse course

Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Mursi opened his first public address after his inauguration on Saturday with the words "God is greatest, above everyone" and pledged to keep the country on a democratic course after Hosni Mubarak's fall.

He spoke at Cairo University to ordinary people, politicians and generals. He told the latter they were now free to take their troops back to barracks to focus on national security.

Those Islamicist radicals are leopards that don’t change their spots.

Maybe jackals and hyenas is a better choice of words than leopards.

After all, there is a basic nobility carried by the leopard.

AnglicanFirst,

Perhaps we owe it to the people of Egypt to allow President Mursi first to demonstrate his failure to keep his pledges. After all, much the same doomsday scenario was prophesied for Turkey when the Islamists first came in, but - while that government is far from perfect - its imperfections don’t seem vastly different from those of the secularist parties that preceded it.

There’s a difference between being on one’s guard and writing something off before it’s even begun. Twenty years ago, I would never have predicted a government in Northern Ireland in which the DUP and Sein Fein shared power.
